We can make up things in our heads that are so dark and gloomy, creating fears out of things that may never happen. But sometimes, we can make up things so beautiful, warm, and comforting that reality can’t quite live up to them. You create this little world in your head, imagining how it will feel, how safe it will be, how happy it might make you. And when it finally happens, you realize it feels different from the version you held onto in your mind. Maybe that’s the strange thing about imagination. Sometimes it creates something so beautiful that reality can’t help but feel like a lesser version of it. And there are moments when you wonder if it’s better to leave certain things untouched in your mind, where they can stay warm and beautiful forever, instead of bringing them into the real world and discovering that they were never meant to feel quite as good as they did in your head. Maybe I’m holding onto a version of us that only exists in my head. Maybe it’s time for me to go.
