This was 14 years ago but it plays on my mind. I had been struggling emotionally at school because my friends kept leaving me out. My physics teacher kept me behind after class for a quick chat about my recent outbursts. She told me her daughter was having the same problem with her friends, and they found out it was because she's autistic. I got the impression she was suggesting that I might be. I remember saying I didn't want to know why I was like this (I knew deep down I was autistic, but I also had dreadful internalised ableism). Then I thought it probably sounded like I'd be ashamed if I was autistic, and that her daughter should be too. I felt so bad. Anyway I eventually pushed enough internalised ableism out of the way to get diagnosed last year and yes I felt some shame for a while, but now I know I'm just an autistic lady. I kind of wanna find a way to reach out to that teacher and tell her, and I wanna become friends with her daughter. Idk if thats weird tho
