I think Gattaca did a bad job at portraying the horrors of eugenics. Why does every character who doesn't get genetic editing before birth have a medical condition by default? That's just not what happens in real life. But also, as a parent, why WOULDN'T you choose that? Why in god's name would you have your child be sick for life? Just to be 'different?' Plus the movie's messaging about how people can overcome anything by willpower rather than genetics is just a toxic positive extremely prevalent hollywood cliche. Honestly, the film seems just another example of anti-tech fearmongering slop for generationalist fundies to consume because it validates their viewpoint than any meaningful critique. ATP, eugenics has become an overused word, just like nazi and i worry these false accusations can undermine real concerns.
