Yesterday was my high school graduation. It was a huge milestone, yet I left feeling completely sad and deeply disappointed. I took home seven certificates, three academic and four extracurricular (Performance Arts, Rugby, Athletics, and Peer Support). I know I have things to be grateful for, but the day was vastly different from what I had imagined, and I am struggling to reconcile the two. All I really wanted was to feel exceptional, proud, and accomplished. Watching my friends receive certificates for more than four subjects left me feeling excluded and alone, especially that evening seeing everyone post their photos, achievements, and friend groups. What hurts most is the finality, there is no “I’ll do better next time.” This isn't the first time my achievements carry a weight of sadness. Why do my most special days always carry so much sadness? Why do I achieve something meaningful yet walk away feeling like something is missing.
